Older scooters are better

May 20, 2026

Running a mobility rental business in Quarteira and Vilamoura isn’t just about handing over keys; it’s about survival—both for the machines and the business.

Every day, we get asked why our fleet features classic, heavy-duty models instead of the shiny, lightweight plastic scooters you see in glossy brochures. The answer isn’t an excuse; it’s a simple, upfront reality check about local infrastructure, how rental scooters get treated, and the brutal economics of making a business work.

1. The Realities of Rental Abuse

When someone buys a  mobility scooter, they careful steer around obstacles, park it gently, and clean it weekly. When they rent one for a week on holiday, that care can and often does disappear.

Modern scooters are built like cheap toys. They are mostly thin plastic and lightweight components designed for indoor shopping malls. If we put those flimsy, modern models into our rental fleet, they would not last long.

2. Quarteira and Vilamoura Were Not Built for Plastic Scooters

The Algarve is beautiful, but the infrastructure here is a nightmare for weak mobility equipment.

Between Quarteira and Vilamoura, drop-curbs and ramps are few and far between. When a rider hits a dead end with a square, 6-inch concrete curb and no ramp in sight, they don’t turn around—they try to drive up or down it.

The classic stone calçada (Portuguese pavement) makes the scooter jiggle and rattle.

  • Older models were engineered like tanks, featuring heavy steel-reinforced frames, high ground clearance, and massive high-torque motors that can take a beating.

  • Newer models shake apart, bottom out on the curbs, and burn out their small motors trying to fight the terrain.

We use the older variety because they are the only machines powerful and durable enough to handle the harsh local reality without breaking down and leaving our customers stranded.

We source, rebuild, and meticulously maintain the older, classic variety of heavy-duty scooters. They have the steel frames, the raw motor power, and the high clearance needed to survive the rental market and the Algarve’s challenging streets.

It’s the only way to provide a reliable ride at a fair price while keeping our business moving forward.
