Meet the Family Behind Bikerent.pt: 42 Years of Algarve History

May 28, 2026

When you rent a bicycle or a mobility scooter for your holiday, you have choices. You could open a corporate app, type your credit card details into a faceless platform, and hope a functional piece of metal is waiting for you in a locker somewhere.

Or, you contact bikerent.pt on Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and become part of a local story that began right here in Quarteira over four decades ago.

We aren’t a corporate franchise, and we aren’t an app startup. We are a family. And for us, this business isn’t just about renting wheels—it’s about sharing the home we love.

Where It All Began: A Quarteira Love Story (1984)

To understand why we do what we do, you have to go back to 1984. That was the year I first arrived in Quarteira and met a beautiful Portuguese lady who would become my wife, my partner, and the foundation of our family for 42 incredible years.

Though she has unfortunately passed away, her spirit, her warmth, and her deep love for the Portuguese way of life are embedded in everything we do at the shop.

Together, we built a life split between England and Portugal. Two of our children were born here, two in England. Today, I am incredibly lucky to have three of my children, nine grandchildren, and even a great-grandchild living right here in the Algarve near me.

When we say we are a local, family-run business, we mean it. When you visit us at Torre Peron 1, you are dealing directly with a family that is rooted in this community.

We Speak Your Language (Literally and Culturally)

Having called Portugal home for 18 years, we bridge the gap for travelers. We speak fluent Portuguese and English, meaning we don’t just understand the mechanics of a bicycle—we understand the local community, the hidden trails, the best spots and the paths to take if you want to avoid the midday summer crowds.

We’ve watched Quarteira grow from a quiet coastal spot into the vibrant, beautiful cycling destination it is today. We know every bike lane, every curb, and every flat coastal promenade because we’ve ridden them with our own children and grandchildren.

Because we are independent, we don’t answer to a corporate head office or a rigid app algorithm. We answer to you.

We know that travel plans change. Flights get delayed, kids get tired, and unexpected things happen on holiday. That’s why we pride ourselves on ultimate flexibility. You don’t need to navigate a complicated online portal to extend your rental or ask a question.

Our Golden Rule: Just call us or send a quick WhatsApp message. We answer directly, we react fast, and we treat you like a neighbour, not a booking number.

Whether you need an extra helmet, a change in delivery time, or a recommendation for a flat route suitable for a grandad on a mobility scooter and a toddler in a chariot, we are here to make it happen smoothly.

Because our own family spans four generations—from myself down to my great-grandchild—we know exactly what it takes to make a multi-generational holiday work.

We meticulously maintain our fleet at our garage to ensure safety and comfort for everyone:

  • For the Adventurers: Premium mountain bikes and e-bikes to explore the rugged red cliffs of Falésia or head inland.

  • For the Cruisers: Comfortable city bikes with baskets for morning trips to the famous Quarteira fish and fruit market.

  • For the Whole Family: High-quality youth bikes, baby seats, and trailers (chariots).

  • For Accessibility: Reliable mobility scooters and wheelchairs so that grandparents can cruise smoothly right alongside the kids on the flat boardwalks.
