Ah, the good old UK. The land of tea, queuing, and occasionally re-enacting terrible ideas from the past. And now, the government has decide dhat we need ID cards again. Because, apparently, the best way to show how free and democratic we are is to carry around a little plastic card or a digital equivalent .
The last time the UK had ID cards was during the Second World War. You know, bombs falling, ration books, Churchill growling about fighting on the beaches. That sort of vibe. Back then, it made sense. By 1952, they were scrapped because Britain realised, “Wait a second… we’re not actually at war with half the planet anymore. Maybe we don’t need everyone flashing their papers like extras in a Cold War spy movie.”
Fast forward 70+ years and here we are again. The government wants to bring them back. Why? Oh, the usual excuses: immigration, crime, immigration, fraud, immigration, terrorism, immigration, bad haircuts—you name it. But here’s the funny part: most of Europe already has ID cards. The Freedom Problem
One of the great things about the UK—at least until now—has been that you don’t need to carry your papers everywhere like you’re in some Orwellian cosplay. You can walk around, buy a sandwich, hop on a train, and nobody demands: “Your documents, citizen!”
Introduce ID cards, and suddenly it’s not “innocent until proven guilty” anymore—it’s “innocent until you’ve flashed your laminated barcode of obedience.”

And let’s not forget: it’ll cost billions. Because nothing screams British government project like an expensive scheme that doesn’t work properly.
