Where to Cycle?
This cycling route is one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets, taking you from the lively promenade of Quarteira to the serene, salt-scented air of the Ria Formosa.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this 25km (approx. 15-mile) journey offers a perfect blend of luxury resorts, raw nature, and a unique “planespotting” thrill.

The Route: Quarteira to Faro Island
Departure: Quarteira & Vilamoura
Start your ride at the Quarteira Promenade. Head to Julia’s restaurant, beach bar & lounge travelling through the upmarket resort of Vale do Lobo until you reach Praia Do Garrao. You’ll trade the urban buzz for the iconic red sandstone cliffs and umbrella pines that define this stretch of the coast.

At Julia´s you will see the start of the transition into the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The “Walk/Cycle Way” through Ria Formosa is where the magic happens. On one side, you have the shimmering lagoons and salt pans (salinas); on the other, the Atlantic breeze. The pavement eventually gives way to the famous Ludo Trail—a well-maintained gravel and dirt path that is a dream for cyclists.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Don’t be surprised to see flamingos, spoonbills, and azure-winged magpies.

The Terrain: It’s flat and accessible, making it perfect for a steady pace while you soak in the views of one of Portugal’s “Seven Natural Wonders.”

The “Touch the Plane” Experience
As the trail approaches the perimeter of Faro Airport (FAO), the scenery takes a dramatic, industrial turn. This is a famous hotspot where the landing strip meets the marshland.
Because the path runs directly under the flight path, the planes come in incredibly low. The roar of the engines and the sheer scale of the aircraft overhead is an adrenaline-pumping highlight—you’ll feel like you could almost reach up and touch the wings!

5. Over the New Bridge to Faro Island
The final leg of your journey takes you toward the sea. Since January 2025, a brand-new bridge connects the mainland to Faro Island (Praia de Faro).

The Bridge: Unlike the old narrow crossing, the new bridge features dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, making the crossing safe and scenic.

The Reward: Once across, you’re greeted by the “Island” vibe—a long stretch of golden sand with plenty of beach bars. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cerveja or a coffee and watch the sunset over the lagoon.

Quick Tips for Your Ride
Bike Type: A hybrid or mountain bike is best for the gravel sections of the Ludo Trail.

Sun Protection: There is very little shade in the Ria Formosa. Wear a hat!

Timing: Early morning or late afternoon (Golden Hour) offers the best light for photos and cooler temperatures.

Planespotting: Check a flight tracker app (like FlightRadar24) to time your arrival with the big arrivals for the best experience. ouch the wings!
