Whether you’re checking the IPMA app or the evening news, you’ve probably noticed that the Portuguese weather alerts have recently started looking like a pack of Skittles—Yellow, Orange, and the occasional Red—scattered across the map.
If the news is to be believed, we should probably be lashing ourselves to the nearest palm tree. But for those of us living in Quarteira, the reality is a bit more… “Algarve-style.”
The Weather Apocalypse vs. Reality
The headlines love a bit of drama, don’t they? They use phrases like “Unprecedented Rough Seas” and “Severe Coastal Events” to describe what we usually call “Tuesday.”
Currently, while the news is busy frightening everyone with tales of 5-meter waves (mostly hitting the west coast, mind you), here on our shores, we’re looking at a much more manageable 2.5-meter swell. It’s enough to make the sea look impressive, but hardly a reason to start building an ark.
Deciphering the Rainbow
The alert system can be a bit confusing, so here is the “Bikerent.pt Guide” to what those colors actually mean for your afternoon ride:
| Color Alert | Official Meaning | What it actually means for Biking |
| Yellow | “Potentially Dangerous” | You might get a free facial from some light drizzle. |
| Orange | “Severe Weather” | Hold onto your handlebars; it’s a bit breezy. |
| Red | “Great Danger” | Stay inside, eat some bacalhau, and wait 20 minutes for the sun. |
The Forecast “Flip-Flop”
One minute the forecast says light rain (with a 35% chance—hardly a commitment), and the next, it’s sunny with 16°C. The wind is currently coming from the Southwest at around 17 mph, which, in cycling terms, means you’ll feel like a Tour de France pro going one way and a stationary bike going the other.
The Golden Rule of Quarteira: If you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes. Or better yet, look out the window instead of at the news. Usually, between the “terrifying” gusts and the “monster” waves, there’s a massive gap of glorious sunshine perfect for a cruise down the promenade.
Don’t let the news dampen your gears!
The waves are for looking, the wind is for cooling, and the bikes are for riding. Don’t let a “Yellow Alert” stop you from enjoying the fresh air—just maybe leave the umbrella at home unless you want to use it as a sail.
